Kalihiwai Ridge
Kauaʻi Island
Hawai’i
This cleverly designed house may look simple, but it is the culmination of an architect having mastered his craft: Intentional arrangements of entries, corridors, doors and windows, beautifully arranged active and passive spaces, optimised natural lighting, sensibly arranged shaded areas, natural ventilation, locally-sourced raw and finished materials, organic colour tones, traditional construction techniques, and topped off with artisan furniture pieces.
The lānai in front of the open plan living room and each bedroom together with the pocket divisions featuring richly layered landscaping of plumeria trees, ferns, flowers and ground cover create ingeniously seamless active and passive spaces connecting the interior and exterior spaces.
The interior design continuous the design approach. We'd describe the almost minimalist, organic look and feel simply as "honest architecture and design". Matte polished concrete floors, windows with timber louvres, handle-less timber cabinetry, integrated fridge with matching timber doors and minimalist metal pull handles, stone benchtops with a matching waterfall island bench, exposed range hood with open timber shelves, and all matched by curated light fittings and furniture.
Behind all our works there is an intention...in this project we were inspired by the architect's design inspiration of "anahā" (the Hawaiian term for the reflection of light). We aimed at catching a “moment in time” in our images, and responded with dappled light, bokeh effects, framed lighting, stark contrasts between light and shadows, and some highlight reflections on an accessory to guide viewers' eyes…
Our CG images are as much an homage to Noho Workshop’s philosophy and craft, as a love letter towards honest, thoughtful, vernacular architecture.
